UNDERSTANDING EMILY

Summary

Chapter Four develops the conflict that drives the love story. Emily’s confusion upon Jeff’s leaving (the previous night) comes out as anger at Douglass in a poem she writes. She doesn’t understand why she feels what she feels, but it is evident to Jeff that in the poem, she is referring to the new feelings brought on by Douglass, and not to Douglass himself. But Douglass doesn’t know why the distinction matters, and he is devastated.

Cheryl’s supportive character unfolds here. Description as such was begun in Chapter One, when Jeff went to pick her up at the airport, then again when Douglass let his thoughts flow freely. In this chapter, Cheryl’s support as a dance partner is seen as the culmination of her life-long camaraderie with Douglass.
