GRASPING AT UNDERSTANDING
Summary
Chapter Five brings Emily and Douglass together by their similarly extraordinary imaginations. Because of his experience working with children, Douglass is able to share some of Emily’s unique perceptions. He also learns of her rigid range of thinking and her constant need for practice with idiomatic expressions. Lastly, Douglass is taught how to guide and redirect Emily’s thinking for the week that Jeff will be in Chicago. By the end of the chapter, Emily and Douglass are partners, “two…peas in a pod,” as Jeff puts it.
