As I understand it, American House, which is on Carpenter Road in Ypsilanti, Michigan, is the only facility for people with disabilities in the MIChoice WAIVER Medicaid Program to live in, which means it’s the only option for these individuals other than their home or a nursing home. Yet American House is technically an independent living community. What I’m saying, and asking, is, what sense does it make to restrict the choices of people who need assistance to one independent living community? It’s not a choice; its not fair treatment; it’s not the American way.
I may be wrong, so I encourage fact-checking, but it looks to me like facilities just don’t want to contract with a Medicaid program. And the MIChoice WAIVER program seemingly doesn’t understand that people with disabilities may need assistance. Anyway, I am thankful for American House.
