Texting has been around for a while, I guess, but I guess I always associated the medium with crazy teenagers or something, or maybe the techno-dunce in me said ‘stay away.’ It wasn’t until a year ago that my friend Joel got me hooked on it. And how liberating it has become for me!
Talking on the phone has always been particularly difficult for me, because the telephone distorts anyone’s voice to some extent, and mine is already weak (due to a damaged vocal cord.) And besides, the absence of body language deprives the communication of its necessary supplement. In communication through texting, of course, that body language problem is still there, but I finally can say everything I want to say without the anxiety and with the assurance that the person at the other end will hear and understand it! Not only can the normal pace of communication endure (almost), but I am free to express myself. I have always expressed myself better in writing–things just come out that I don’t even realize. But oh! Now that I can combine my skill in writing with my communication, I can be a better friend, client, daughter, sister, employee, whatever!
